8 Ways To Let Go and Become More Peaceful

We all want to feel more peaceful, especially in these modern times where we are so subjected to stressful situations. So, how can we let go in order to feel more calm? How can we move towards greater peace in our lives?

Here are 8 ways to let go and become more peaceful:

1. Accept that change is always happening

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it and join the dance”. – Alan Watts

We may attempt to cling to situations that we enjoy, wanting it to last forever. However, trying to force a moment to last only causes us stress and it steals our sense of peace.

We cannot stand still in life no matter how hard we try, as everything in the Universe is in constant motion. We are always being moved forward, so trying to stay anchored in the same place, will over time cause suffering.

Yes, change is scary. But when we resist it, we feel stuck and uneasy. Further, most of us are addicted to a sense of control – the idea that if everything stays the same, we are in control and safe. Unfortunately, this is a false sense of control that isn’t serving us in the long run.

If we can let go of the need to feel in control of everything, and accept that change is always occurring, we can move through life with a much greater feeling of peace.

2. Trust that the Universe is on your side.

This and the above principle go together. When we fully trust that Mother Nature and the Universe is on our side, we can be at peace.

If we don’t fully trust the Universe, we may find ourselves taking fear-based action, thinking we need to interfere in a situation that would have worked itself out perfectly if we’d let it go and trusted the universe to handle it.

In order to be peaceful, we must trust that Mother Nature wants us – just like a flower – to bloom. When we learn how to get out of our own way and practice faith, we find peace.

3. Let go of the old meaning

When we find ourselves in a challenging situation, or we feel hurt or wounded, it can be very helpful to remind ourselves that there’s no such thing as a good or bad experience, there is simply experience. And we’re the ones who give it all meaning.

Most of the time, the meaning we apply to a situation comes from early experiences in life. And so, by bringing the old story with us, we are projecting the old on to the current moment.

So, by pausing and reminding ourselves of the truth – that all of our experiences are inherently meaningless – and that we’re the ones creating or recreating it, we can allow ourselves to let go of the old meaning and be at peace.

4. Surrender to pain

Our society has taught us that pain is something bad that is to be avoided. And though it can feel challenging, pain isn’t without purpose. In life, pain and pleasure go together – where one cannot exist without the other. Remind yourself that it is pain that gives us pleasure because we wouldn’t recognize or appreciate pleasure if it’s brother, pain didn’t exist.

Further, it’s often the painful experiences that catapult us into a new, better life experience, that’s more in alignment with our soul, so in this way, pain leads us to pleasure.

Buddha said:

“Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.”

Suffering occurs only when we struggle against pain. If we can let go and surrender to the discomfort, we’ll often find that it’s not as challenging as we were taught. We’re also in for a much more peaceful experience of life.

5. Allow yourself to be human

Yes, let go of perfectionism. Perfectionism is one of the greatest robbers of a peaceful mind. No single human being is perfect, no matter how they portray themselves on social media.

Trying to be perfect is exhausting and not realistic. As human beings, we must allow ourselves to make mistakes – as long as we learn from them.

Let go of the need to do everything right and be flawless all the time. Acknowledge your humanness and allow yourself to be a work in progress.

6.  Don’t be concerned about what other people think

Wanting to be someone else is a waste of who you are.” – Kurt Cobain

You cannot please everybody all the time. Period.

Fearing what other people think is one of the most common cages holding us back in life. The truth, though, is that if we are to live authentically, we cannot care about what other people think of us. We must honor ourselves enough to live life the way we want to live it.

We must learn to let go of external validation and love ourselves. And with self-love comes a greater feeling of peace.

7. Let go of the need for people to agree with you

In my own life, I’ve encountered many people who didn’t view life the way that I did. They simply resonated at a different frequency. That’s fine.

Even though it’s natural to want the people we love to perceive the world the way we do, we cannot force our perceptions of reality on others.

Everyone is on their own unique journey and we must let them be on their own path of growth. We can share our perspectives with them and hopefully plant some powerful seeds, but the seeds must grow without our interference.

They must come to their realizations on their own. When we can allow ourselves to respect and love someone, even when they view life differently than us, we can be at peace.

8. Flow and trust in Divine timing

Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished. ” Lao Tzu

Everything in Nature happens in its own timing, at just the right time. Like the waves of the ocean roll out and flow back in, everything in life comes and goes. That’s how Nature works.

If we learn to flow with rhythm of life we can be in greater harmony and peace. Rest assured that there are no mistakes in this Universe.

We can allow ourselves to let go of the grip and trust that everything happens at the right time. We are all exactly where we need to be in this moment. We are in no hurry.

When we come to this awareness, we can let go of our need to be somewhere else and allow ourselves to be at peace and simply enjoy life.
